From The Indians To Present Day, How Lake Arrowhead Has ChangedWhen you talk about Lake Arrowhead history, you must begin back in 1826,
when the first white men came to Lake Arrowhead. Then known as Bear Valley, The history of Lake Arrowhead takes us through many changes in land ownership, with Lake Arrowhead property first being transferred to Arrowhead Reservoir and Power Company back in 1905. It was this company that first began construction of the historical dam to create the lake at Arrowhead. But this was stopped in 1912, and only completed in 1923 when the Arrowhead Lake Company purchased the land. In 1946 the Los Angeles Turf Club purchased Lake Arrowhead and its surrounding properties and made numerous land donations including $50,000 to build the hospital. The North Shore Tavern was donated to the University of California and is now Lake Arrowhead’s famous UCLA Conference Centre. History shows that between 1960 and 1978 Lake Arrowhead changed ownership
on many occasions. A new dam was built in 1974 and a lake known as Papoose
Lake. In 1979 Lake Arrowhead Fire Protection District destroyed the village except for the dance pavilion, post office, bank and Lake Arrowhead real estate office. The new village seen today was built and includes a variety of shops and factory outlets. The Lake Arrowhead resort which opened in 1982 was built on the original site of the Arlington Lodge.
